McAlester Army Ammunition Plant to Unveil New Facility Using Cutting-Edge Technology
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Butte, Montana–Bunker-buster bombs will begin production next month using machinery made in Butte, Montana by Resodyn Acoustic Mixers.
On 9 a.m. July 30 the military will hold a ribbon-cutting for the $60 million Multi-Purpose Load Facility at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant (MCAAP) in McAlester, Oklahoma.
“This 60-million-dollar facility will be the centerpiece for McAlester Army Ammunition Plant and will be ready to continue to provide world class explosive loading for the Department of Defense for years to come,” the Army wrote in a press release.
A cornerstone piece of equipment in the Multi-Purpose Load Facility will be the Resodyn Acoustic Mixers’ RAM 55 H.
The RAM 55 H, capable of mixing a 55-gallon batch of material, is powered by innovative ResonantAcoustic® Mixing “RAM” technology, which uses the physics of resonance to thoroughly, but gently mix explosive formulations safely.
The Multi-Purpose Load Facility is the first of its kind, state of the art, large caliber weapon explosive loading facility developed by the Air Force and the Army and paid for by the Air Force. The facility manufactures and loads explosive materials into bomb casings.
Airplanes drop these munitions and steer them remotely, and then they burrow underground before they explode. This allows the Air Force to hit bunkers, research facilities, missile silos and other structures immune to conventional bombardment. The weapons can penetrate reinforced concrete, making them ideal to target command locations, weapon storage sites, and communication resources.
This new facility offers a huge savings to the U.S. taxpayer. The RAM 55 H reduces the mixing time of the explosive contents from hours to minutes. This attribute saves time and money on conventionally manufactured explosives, which need extensive machining to get into proper shape. The RAM 5 H, capable of mixing a 5-gallon batch, has been used by McAlester since 2014 to mix BLU-109 components into near-net-shape products, substantially reducing the part costs over their previous manufacturing method. This change in manufacturing methodology enabled by the RAM technology and has saved taxpayers over $20 million to date.
Senior leadership from the Attack Division and Program Executive Office of Eglin Air Force Base will be present at the ribbon-cutting. They will be joined by representatives from the Pentagon, Hill Air Force Base, U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command, Air Combat Command (ACC), TWAC, and others. Lawrence Farrar, President and CEO of Resodyn Acoustic Mixers, will also be in attendance by invitation.
